Search engine optimisation is the art of optimising your website and online profile in such a way that search engines will see you as a high ‘authority’ and therefore will rank your website higher than others. These ‘organic’ search engine listings are trusted by consumers and the number 1 position will get a lot of clicks.

As you can see in the graph above from SEOmad.com, the number 1 position for a keyword gets a much higher click through rate than any of the other positions. Few people bother to go to page 2 of the search engine results.
